Upgrading Service Capacity of Playback Servers with Buffer Caches

چکیده
In this paper, we propose a new approach to exploit buffer caches to upgrade the service capacity of a multimedia on-demand playback system. The basic idea behind exploiting buffer caches is that, if we can relay the data of highly frequently accessed programmes from one access request to another, then we can upgrade the service capacity of the system without requiring higher disk bandwidth. As the costs of memory chips continue to drop at a fast pace, the future trend apparently favors implementation of the relaying mechanism. The simulation-based study shows that, for short programmes such as cartoons or songs, the relaying mechanism can increase the number of access instances that the system can serve during a period of time by up to 124% and an average of 86% without installing more disks. Meanwhile, the average rejection rate observed by the clients, i.e. the rate that access requests are rejected by the system due to limited capacity, drops from 60.4% to 7.0%.

On Two-Echelon Multi-Server Queue with Balking and Limited Intermediate Buffer
In this paper we study two echelon multi-server tandom queueing systems where customers arrive according to a poisson process with two different rates. The service rates at both echelons are independent of each other. The service times of customers is assumed to be completed in two stages. The service times at each stage are exponentially distributed. At the first stage, the customers may balk ...
متن کاملOpportunistic and Playback-sensitive Scheduling for Video Streaming
Given the strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of video streaming, this paper proposes a novel solution for simultaneous streaming of multiple video sessions over a mobile cellular system. The proposed solution combines a buffer management strategy with a packet scheduling algorithm. The buffer management strategy selectively discards packets of a user from base station buffer whereas t...
متن کاملDelivery of Pre-stored Videos for Mobile Clients with Insufficient Playback Buffer and Bounded Delay Guarantee
A deterministic service model assisted by a sufficiently large playback buffer space can provide bounded delay guarantees for video packets and simplify network resource management. However, many popular mobile terminals do not have sufficient memory capacity for deterministic video services since the embedded memory is limited and needs to be shared by numerous software programs and masses of ...
متن کاملAn Effective DRAM Cache Architecture for Scale-Out Servers
Scale-out workloads are characterized by in-memory datasets, and consequently massive memory footprints. Due to the abundance of request-level parallelism found in these workloads, recent research advocates for manycore architectures to maximize throughput while maintaining quality of service. On-die stacked DRAM caches have been proposed to provide the required bandwidth for manycore servers t...
متن کاملSupporting server-level fault tolerance in concurrent-push-based parallel video servers
Parallel video servers have been proposed for building large-scale video-on-demand (VoD) systems from multiple low-cost servers. However, when adding more servers to scale up the capacity, system-level reliability will decrease as failure of any one of the servers will cripple the entire system. To tackle this reliability problem, this paper proposes and analyzes architectures to support server...
